  • The Kelley Blue Book®

Kelley Blue Book® is the largest appraiser of automobiles. The company has become so identified with its services that the trademarked terms blue book and blue book value have become synonymous with a car's market value. Les Kelley founded Kelley Blue Book® in 1918. It began as the Kelley Kar Company with three used Model T Fords and one employee. To obtain inventory, he began circulating lists of cars he wanted to acquire along with the price he was willing to pay for them. The price lists quickly became a trusted standard among Los Angeles area banks and car dealers. In 1926, he published his first Kelley Blue Book®, a guide to used car values. In the 1940s a large number of returning serviceman caused a huge spike in the demand for cars and the prices skyrocketed. During this time, Kelley Blue Book® expanded to become a nationwide automobile appraisal guide. New-car appraisals were added in 1966. In the years following, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, and mobile home appraisal guides were added to company's list of services. The company began its website service in 1995 and has become one of the most visited automobile related sites. Providing new automobile information about a make's MSRP, dealer invoice price, and expected retail price. Providing used cars retail value, trade-in value and private party price. It obtains retail pricing by collecting information about actual retail sales.

    Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price

The MSRP list price (recommended retail price) the manufacturer recommends that the retailer sell it for. Prior to the spread of manufacturer's suggested retail pricing, there were no defined prices on vehicles and car dealers often adjusted prices to what the salesperson thought the prospective purchaser would be willing to pay for a particular vehicle. The "sticker price" the price of a vehicle often includes a substantial markup over the MSRP. The actual price paid to the manufacturer by the dealer is not common knowledge. In many cases sticker prices are inflated in order to give customers the feeling of getting the car for well below the sticker price after negotiations, while ensuring good profit to the dealer. It is the buyers' responsibility to negotiate the vehicles price.
